Make Your Pledge: Domestic Work is Work
Domestic Work is Work!
In the UK, domestic workers are not granted the same rights and protections as other types of work. We want that to change.
In 2011, the International Labour Organization passed Convention 189 that recognises that domestic work is real work. ILO 189 has been ratified by 35 states, but the UK isn’t one of them.
The UK’s failure to ratify ILO 189 means thousands of domestic workers, including migrant domestic workers, are not guaranteed their basic rights leaving them at risk of exploitation and abuse behind closed doors.
We are calling on you to pledge your support to recognise that domestic work is real work. By making your pledge, you support our call to demand the UK Government to ratify ILO 189, recognise that domestic work is real work and guarantee domestic workers essential rights and protections.
Once you have signed, please will you consider posting this message on social media to amplify our call:
I pledge to recognise that domestic work is work. I’m calling on the UK Government to ratify ILO 189 and guarantee domestic workers essential rights to protect them from exploitation and abuse. Stand up for domestic workers and sign Kalayaan’s pledge: (link)”
